Our son, Tait, being born almost three months early, made an eventful March for our family! Tait was born at 27 weeks gestation weighing a mere 1lb 14oz. He was immediately whisked away by the neonatology team and assessed. His early arrival into the world and the complications that arise with a micro-preemie were stressful and left our family struggling to cope with what was to come and how we would manage.
As part of Tait’s development it was important for him to have skin-to-skin contact as much as possible and to be held and talked to by his family, however, I couldn’t stay in the hospital. I couldn’t imagine leaving my tiny baby in Hamilton while I went home. I dreaded the idea of having to drive back and forth to the hospital every day. I would have spent more time in the car than with the little man who needed me.
Then the most wonderful opportunity was presented to our family…we could stay at Ronald McDonald House Charities South Central Ontario!
From the moment I walked in the doors of Ronald McDonald House Charities South Central Ontario (RMHCSCO), I felt at ease and supported. I quickly realized that this would be my home away from home! This saying may be overused, but there isn’t a place that I’ve been that has the conveniences of home and makes you feel a part of something more than the four walls surrounding you. The House, the staff and the volunteers are truly amazing. Simple smiles and greetings, events and healthy meals take your mind off things for a little while and all help lift your spirits and pull you through the rough patches.
RMHCSCO allowed me to spend every day with my son in the NICU and made me feel part of a bigger family. Everyone in the House is fighting their own battles, but we have each other and the knowledge we aren’t alone. It’s hard to put into words the absolute blessing that is Ronald McDonald House Charities South Central Ontario. The support, the encouragement and the feeling that you are a part of a family, truly makes this House feel like a home!
