Individual Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers are the heart and soul of Ronald McDonald House Charities® South Central Ontario. We rely on our team of dedicated and committed volunteers who play a valuable role in the day-to-day running of our House, the Ronald McDonald Family Rooms® and caring for our families.


Volunteer Information Session Sign-up

Thank you for your interest in volunteering. We start the process by inviting all volunteer candidates to attend an Information Session. This provides the opportunity to learn about Ronald McDonald House Charities South Central Ontario and the volunteer opportunities available, making it easy to identity what role(s) may interest you. 

Please note that our volunteer program has been suspended due to the COVID-19 crisis. We will not be hosting Information Sessions. Please check back at a later date. 

Please note: Candidates must be 16 and over to volunteer individually or must be accompanied by an adult of 18 years or older.

Ronald McDonald Family RoomS® (located at McMaster Hospital)

The Ronald McDonald Family Rooms are comfortable, quiet spaces for families to rest and rejuvenate while their children are being cared for in the hospital. Families of children in the hospital visit the room to relax, enjoy a snack or refreshment, watch TV or a movie, play games or with toys, use the computer, and do laundry.

Volunteers in the Family Rooms provide an atmosphere of warmth and compassion to all families. Volunteers assist in the day-to-day operation of the Family Rooms by providing comfort and support to the families and children who visit the room. Duties include greeting, and assisting families, making coffee and putting out snacks, cleaning and maintaining the space, as well as ensuring supplies are well stocked.

Shift Times: 8-11 a.m.; 11 a.m. -3 p.m.; 3-7 p.m.; 7-10 p.m.

Happy Wheels Hospitality Cart (located at McMaster Hospital)

Volunteers operating the Happy Wheels Hospitality Cart serve families throughout the inpatient and outpatient wards of McMaster Hospital. Volunteers brings comfort to families by serving them various snacks, beverages, toiletry items, and toys/activities at their children’s hospital rooms.

You must be 18 years of age or older to apply to volunteer for this role.

Shift Times: 9-11 a.m. (every day); 2-4 p.m. (Tuesdays and Thursdays)

Breakfast Service Volunteer

Volunteers oversee the continental breakfast service and/or serve the hot breakfast service we provide families each morning in our dining room.

Dinner Service Volunteer

Dinner Service Volunteers work alongside our chefs to serve meals to families, replenish supplies, tidy the serving and dining room area, and pack up/label leftover meals for families to take with them to the hospital. 

You must be 18 years of age or older to apply to volunteer for this role.

shift times: 3:45 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. or 4:15 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.

House Refresher

House Refresher Volunteers assist our housekeeping staff with maintaining the cleanliness and tidiness of our House. Duties include dusting, sweeping, vacuuming the common areas of the House and helping with House laundry.

You must be 18 years of age or older to apply to volunteer for this role.

shift times: Shifts are 2-4 hours in duration and days are flexible according to the volunteer's schedule.

MOVIE NIGHT Volunteer

Movie Night Volunteers provide a ‘night out’ for the families right at the House. Volunteers prepare snacks and refreshments, serve families and operate the movie equipment.

You must be 18 years of age or older to apply to volunteer for this role.

Reception Volunteer

Reception volunteers are the first contact families and donors encounter when they enter the House. These volunteers will greet and welcome families and visitors, answer the telephone and re-direct calls, manage daily family health checks and provide overall assistance to families and staff as needed.

shift times: 8 a.m. - 12 p.m., 12 p.m. - 3 p.m., 1 p.m. - 5 p.m., 8 p.m. - 11 p.m.

Lawn & Yard Maintenance Volunteer (Spring & Summer Only)

Volunteers are needed to help us keep our lawns looking beautiful for the families staying at the House. Duties include mowing the lawn, trimming grass, sweeping, bagging and discarding cut grass.

You must be 16 years of age or older to apply to volunteer for this role.

shift times: A flexible schedule is available. Volunteers may select any day and time that best suits their own schedule.

Gardening Volunteer (Spring & Summer Only)

Volunteers are needed to help maintain our beautiful gardens for families to enjoy while they stay at the House.  Duties include weeding garden beds, sweeping walkways and patios, clipping hedges and trees and picking up fallen branches.

  • I am interested in volunteering with Ronald McDonald House. How do I get started?

    Sign up for an information session to learn more about our volunteer opportunities. 

  • Can I volunteer in more than one area?

    We place the most suitable volunteer in each position at Ronald McDonald House. Our placement decision is based on the availability of the volunteer, our scheduling needs, and the skills required for each position.  Therefore, we prefer you volunteer in one area for a minimum of six months before exploring other opportunities.  After this time, you are welcome to hold multiple roles as long as you have received appropriate training in each area.

  • How will I know what to do in my new volunteer role?

    Volunteers receive a general orientation, hands-on training and ongoing support in their roles.

  • I’m not sure I have enough time to volunteer.

    We strive to be as flexible as possible to make volunteering easier.  While we’d love to have you here often, volunteers are expected to commit to two shifts per month.  Volunteers may select from a variety of shifts.  We will work together to find a role that meets your availability and schedule.

  • What are the requirements to volunteer?

    You must be 18 years of age or older to apply to volunteer and a minimum commitment of one year is expected. (Note: there are select opportunities for applicants 16 years and older to volunteer accompanied by an adult 18 years or older.)

    You must have a clear police check (criminal records and judicial matters check) no more than three months old.

    Family Room and Happy Wheels Hospitality Cart Volunteers must also provide proof of immunizations and two-step TB test.

    Once we have had a chance to review your application, if you are considered a potential candidate, we will contact you to arrange an interview.
